Pearl Belcourt — grandmother to Steve Garrioch, Shallwi co-owner — lived a life filled with love, hope and a desire to help the people around her — family, friends, and strangers alike.
For years she worked as a caregiver for individuals with mental disabilities out of the home that she shared with her husband Paul. Pearl was also heavily involved in helping Manitoba Métis youth receive funding assistance with post-secondary education and helping low-income families receive suitable housing.
Pearl was an exceptional woman and a true example of love in action. She was an extraordinary mother, grandmother, and friend to many.
In 2000, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and thus began her battle. In order to prevent the spread of the disease, she underwent surgery for a mastectomy and for several years following received chemotherapy. She was, eventually, declared cancer-free but a new battle began — accepting the “new body” that she now lived in.
Through the love and support of her family and friends, she learned to love herself again and put aside the notion that she “wasn’t enough” because, to those who loved her, she was more than enough. She continued to champion causes close to her heart and continued to live a life filled with love and light until her passing in 2014 due to unrelated health issues.
Following her passing, Steve sought out a way to help his grandmother’s legacy live on and when Shallwi launched in 2015, Steve and Brett both felt it necessary to contribute to the Canadian Cancer Society’s efforts in the breast cancer cause understanding the value that early detection, treatment and prevention are what kept Pearl alive for another 14 years. Through their business efforts and their charitable efforts — Team Shallwi — Steve and Brett have participated in the CIBC Run for the Cure in honour of Pearl helping to keep her love and memory alive.
This year we are, once again, incredibly proud to be #runningforPearl.
